Why You Should Be In The Know.
At The Retreat Women’s Health Center, our mission is to detect breast cancer in women as early as possible. That’s why we’re the first and only facility in the region to offer a comprehensive High Risk Breast Cancer Program tailored to your specific needs.
To determine if you’re high risk for breast cancer, we first thoroughly examine your medical history, family and personal history of breast cancer and current lifestyle choices. Plus, we can conduct genetic testing, if necessary. If you are found to be high risk, we develop a personalized action plan to manage that risk through our High Risk Breast Cancer Program. This plan may include increased surveillance (mammograms, MRIs and check ups), dietary and lifestyle changes, complementary and alternative medicine and other types of individualized support.
Research has shown that proactive breast cancer management, as offered in the High Risk Breast Cancer Program at The Retreat, can reduce your risk by up to 90 percent. In fact, certain women with an especially high risk of developing breast cancer should get magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans along with their yearly mammogram, or at an earlier age, according to a new American Cancer Society guideline. The two tests together give doctors a better chance of finding breast cancer early in these women, when it is easier to treat and the chance of survival is greater.
A Team Of High-Risk Specialists
As a part of our comprehensive High Risk Breast Cancer Program, we provide a team of specialists, who are specially trained and experienced in high-risk breast cancer. This team works together at The Retreat in an integrated environment, discussing your case and sharing ideas to surround you with proactive ways to help reduce your breast cancer risk. These breast cancer experts are led by The Retreat’s medical director and board-certified breast surgeon, Dr. Laura L. Morris. Dr. Morris is an advocate for women’s health who focuses solely on diseases and problems of the breast. Working with Dr. Morris are certified women’s health nurse practitioner, Brittany Van Groningen; breast health specialist and registered nurse, Sharee Hartman; and breast radiologist, Dr. Jody Barber.
